In 1642, at Sekondi, the Dutch Gold Coast established Fort Orange as a trading post. In 1690, the trading post was expanded into a fort. In 1682, it was joined by the English Fort Sekondi. It was sold to the United Kingdom in 1872, along with the rest of the Dutch Gold Coast, and presently functions as a lighthouse.
Fort Orange is a Dutch stronghold located a few meters off the coast of Sekondi in the Western Region. Though it was used as a trading post for a time, Fort Orange was built to serve as a lodge in the 1670s.
The 1670s were also years of fierce European competition for the Gold Coast’s wealth, and the English built a series of forts and lodges within gunning range of Dutch fortresses to weaken the Dutch hold on the coast.
