Ntonso is the birthplace of adinkra fabric and the only site in Ghana where it is still created from the ground up. Ntonso is still Ghana’s largest adinkra maker, a textile renowned for its symbols and fabled wisdom. Originally, the cloth was solely used for funerals in the Ashanti Region, and it was mostly made in black, brown, and red.
However, it is now available in a variety of colors and is widely used throughout Ghana. Ntonso has a modern visitor center where formal guided tours are offered. Visitors can participate in several steps of adinkra manufacture, including dye preparation, fabric dyeing, adinkra stamping, and stamped cloth embroidery, on a walking tour.
